Legislative Coffee. Legislative Coffee. Cobb County residents are invited to a Legislative Coffee on Jan. 13 to discuss the upcoming legislative session with local lawmakers. State senators and representatives from Cobb will discuss proposed legislation and committee assignments for the 2011 session.

The coffee begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Cobb Government Building, 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta.

The session is sponsored by the Rho Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Marietta/Cobb League of Women Voters and the Cobb County Branch of the American Association of University Women.

Speaker: Former State Rep Roger Hines. Mr. Hines is presently a contributor to the Marietta Daily Journal. He has been a teacher, school administrator, and state representative.

He also tutors inmates and will talk about that, and on being a writer for a local newspaper.

Juneteenth Celebration - Historic Marietta Square. The Cobb County branch of the NAACP is hosting the 10th annual Marietta Juneteenth Celebration at historic Marietta Square on Saturday, June 15th. The Juneteenth Celebration is a cultural festival celebrating the date June 19, 1865, which commemorates the date that the last United States slaves were freed. The celebration features music, entertainment, ethnic foods, vendors, moonwalks, history, giveaways, voter registration and fun activities for the whole family.

The LWV Marietta-Cobb and American Association of University Women(AAUW)will host a booth at the festival.

League of Women Voters Marietta-Cobb will be walking in the July 4th Marietta parade starting at the Roswell Street Baptist Church - 774 Roswell Rd., Marietta 30060. Staging for the parade begins at 9 am, and water, a hat and sunscreen if needed, are a good idea. Parade route goes past Marietta Square, and ends at Cherokee Street and North Marietta Parkway (1.6 miles from start to finish), where there are shuttle buses that can take you back to Roswell Street Baptist Church. Or you can stay at Marietta Square for the festivities! League members, friends, neighbors, men, women, teens, children who can walk or children in strollers, are all invited to walk with us.
